Earth Day 2024

This year, our Green Team had big plans to showcase our bike float, creatively decorated as a cow, during the parade. Unfortunately, the float broke down just before the event, so we decided to walk instead and still had a great time! In addition to the parade, we also participated in other homecoming festivities, including selling delicious chili at the tailgate. It was a fantastic way to connect with the community and enjoy the spirit of homecoming!

On February 15, some Green Team members went to the Durango Recycling Center. We learned that the facility pickups about 4,000 tons of recycling every year, and the most important thing our tour guide said was: do not recycle your glass in stream recycling. This is because glass is an abrasive material and metal machines are used in the recycling process. If glass gets into the single stream, the machine breaks down faster which is less sustainable. That is why your being more sustainable to not only recycle but to also recycle glass separately.

In May, DHS Green Team members joined the students in the Park Green Team, at Park Elementary as they planted new plants in their school garden.

Every month Green Team organized Trash Pickup's around the DHS campus and surrounding parks. For about an hour, students picked up trash (and recycling) in order to clean up our local environment.

Green Team members toured Table to Farm Compost, a local composting company, on September 25th. We learned of the merits and practicalities of composting and left with a renewed dedication to introducing compost at DHS.

Green Team created a rocket on the City of Durango's bike float for the DHS Homecoming Parade.
